Join us for a night of art and science. The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering and the Fleet Science Center are partnering with Wine & Canvas San Diego to bring you a night of creativity and enlightenment. Local artist Amanda Rouse will lead you through the process of creating your own masterpiece, a beautiful sunset scene of the Ocean Beach Pier, while her husband, Dr. Robert Letscher, shares his experience and work as a marine biogeochemist researcher who contributes to next-generation climate models.
Bio for Amanda Rouse: Amanda Rouse was raised in Lexington, Kentucky, loving horses, swimming and painting. In 2004 she moved to Florida and attended the University of Miami to study painting and printmaking. After receiving her B.F.A., Amanda continued exhibiting prints in Miami and became a teaching assistant. This experience led her to follow the path of teaching. She moved to Columbus, Ohio, to pursue an M.F.A. at Columbus College of Art and Design, where she was adjunct faculty and also worked in the printmaking lab and designed textiles. She currently resides in San Diego, California, making art and enjoying the sunshine.
Bio for Dr. Robert Letscher: Dr. Robert Letscher is a marine biogeochemist in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine, as well as a visiting scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, CA. His research expertise includes the role of living organisms and ocean chemistry for sustaining the ocean’s role as a sink for atmospheric CO2 in the global carbon cycle. He has logged over 100 days at sea during his career, traveling to the South Pacific, Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. His current pursuits include development and calibration of ocean biogeochemistry in the next generation of climate models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to assess the effects of future warming on ocean biology and chemistry. Dr. Letscher earned a B.S. degree in Marine Science & Chemistry from the University of Miami in 2007 and a Ph.D. in Chemical Oceanography from the Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami in 2012.
