Astronomy

Primary tabs

General Atomics/energy

Demonstrations of states of matter, including high temperature plasma and low temperature cryogens; eddy current production & magnetism, including a levitating magnet; human powered electricity generation, plus discussions of the physics of nuclear fusion will be presented.

From vacuum to volcanoes - nature's drive to mix it up!

Making matter move is nature's way of mixing it up and allowing chemical, electromagnetic, electrostatic, and gravitational interactions to occur. We'll demonstrate movement due to changes in vacuum conditions, formation of magnetic fields from inductive currents, and volcanic action. We will use a vacuum cannon, electromagnetic can launcher, and a demonstration of the coldest volcano on earth to show how nature mixes it up!

California Space Grant Consortium (CaSGC)

We would like to showcase some of the CaSGC sponsored activities within UCSD, including, but no limited to, Near Space Ballooning and Arduino and Micro-Controllers. We will be displaying posters of aerial photography taken from the balloons as well as explanations of the science behind Near Space Ballooning. We will also have Arduino displays which are often used as sensors for climatic data in the payload.

San Diego Public Library

San Diego Public Library is proud to provide STEAM Education during our Spring into STEAM programming. We will provide information about upcoming activities, hands on interactive exhibits for children, and fun library prizes will be available while supplies last. This year's Spring into STEAM theme is called "Blast Off!" Join us as we explore our solar system, and discover new ways to travel beyond our own planet.

California Space Grant Consortium (CasGC)

The UCSD Near Space Ballooning team sponsored by CaSGC will be displaying informational and educational material regarding high altitude ballooning. Also exhibiting will be electronic equipment such as radio transmitters, cameras, satellite navigation systems, and a glider which can all be payload components recording atmospheric data. From past events, we've seen a growing interest from educators and families interested in launching their own balloons due to material accessibility.

University of California, San Diego - Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences

We will have several hands on demonstrations to provide participants with a view of the scale of the universe as well as the methods we use to observe it. Activities will include play-dough planets to build scale models of the solar system, an activity illustrating gravitational lensing, and some models and experimental devices from the lab to show the ins and outs of modern telescopes. We will also have an informational poster describing the ongoing research activities at CASS.
