Education

With the recent surge of interest in space with New Horizons (NASA's mission to Pluto) and hobbyists enthusiasm for launching their own balloons for increased observation and experiment runs, the CaSGC in conjunction with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), will be exhibiting Near Space Ballooning, unmanned balloons involving using a latex weather balloon, usually filled with Helium, to carry payloads through the Earth's atmosphere to very high altitudes, up to 100,000 feet.

Hands-on activities for families

We will have science activities aimed at elementary school and up.

A showcase of FIRST robotics at the Francis Parker Upper School, presented by Team 2485, W.A.R. Lords (We Are Robot Lords). Throughout the day students and mentors will be available to answer questions and share their experiences. Of course, there will also be a 120 pounds robot roaming about too. Come see what it means to be part of FIRST robotics team.

An interactive solar-powered model train demonstration will take place. Visitors can observe the strength of solar power by observing the speed the model train is capable of running solely powered by the sun's energy. Then they can interact with the exhibit and test different ways to make the model train slow down in speed and eventually figure out how to make the model train completely come to a stop.

San Diego State University's School of Nursing is teaching the role of smoking and healthy lungs. Along with a healthy pair of lungs, comes a pig heart for prospectives to observe! We we also have information about the School of Nursing at SDSU and the proper steps to take to get into the program.

Activity side will be performing DNA extractions using wheat germ, information side will be providing handouts about Salk programs

At the booth we will have information about our: Education and Training programs (IT Technician Pathway, Digital Literacy Classes, Senior Tech Ambassador, and specialized trainings/workshops), Digital Media Services (Website services, Video Production, Videography, Graphic Design, Animation), Technical Services (On site, remote and consulting support), and our Hardware Programs (Low-Cost Computer Program, Computer Repair service, Non-Profit donation and Sales, E-Recycling).

We will showcase the research of the USD Biology Department in an interactive and fun way.
