Magnolia Science Academy

Magnolia students will be showcasing award winning future city project and provide hands-on futuristic city building activity for visitors. Future city is a competition for middle schools where students imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future that showcase their solution to a citywide sustainability issue. Project includes virtual city design, city essay, scale model, project plan, and a presentation. For more info visit www.futurecity.org

Biodiesel & Algal Studies Group

Since 2009 Castle Park High students, with Dr. Pomeroy of UCSD, have learned to produce biodiesel from vegetable oil. Students use a particle counter to determine how “clean” the fuel burns and discuss how particulate impacts our global climate. Students present this field data to support the benefits of biodiesel. Our booth, as in years past, will demonstrate the step-by-step process of biodiesel synthesis, discuss the advantages of biodiesel over petroleum and outline the ease of production.

Caltech CCI Solar

CCI Solar will present an interactive, hands-on activity where attendees will be able to make their very own solar cell using common household materials. The magic ingredient of blackberry juice is what absorbs the sun's energy and translates sunlight into electricity; therefore we call our activity "Juice from Juice". We also display fuel cells and other recent solar energy technology. We've successfully presented this activity at 2 past Expo Days and look forward to another year!

San Deigo-Imperial Council Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America's STEM committee would like to have a booth featuring the NOVA Awards program which incorporates learning with cool activities and exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The hope is that these awards stimulate interest in STEM-related fields and shows how science, technology, engineering and mathematics apply to everyday living and the world around them. http://www.sdicbsa.org/Advancement/STEMNovaProgram.php

BP America

Scientists and engineers from BP provide students an opportunity to see how hands-on, interactive science and engineering experiments can be fun and cool. And kids can have one-on-one conversations with BP scientists and engineers, learn about BP’s technology program and career development in BP.

FIRST Tech Challenge Dragons 5229, from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego

The Dragons are the only FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team in the world to apply green energy to the competition. The students will display and discuss their solar charging station that they use to keep their robot charged during competition. The Dragons will also provide a hands-on activity where visitors to the booth will drive a FIRST Tech Challenge robot, and try to score "points" in a simulation of a FIRST competition.
