Environment

We will have students(K-6) showcasing their projects that they have completed in our STREAM program. This students are passionate about their work and look forward to sharing their projects showcasing their solutions to real-world issues to a public audience. Our booth will also include an engineering challenge that the students will help guide attendance through. We have participated in this event for the last 3 year and are excited to be back!

Natural History

Our booth will contain preserved marine invertebrates and fish and we will use these to explain how the City uses marine life to monitor the health of the offshore environment. We will also have some of our water quality oceanographic equipment on display, as well as underwater survey videos showing various forms of fish and invertebrates encountered near the sewage outfall pipe as well out in the open water.

Wildlife education featuring live, local raptor species including Hawks, Falcons, and Owls.

Our booth will include banners, pictures, demonstration items, handouts and giveaways. We have a "Down the Drain" spinning wheel that will draw people toward/into our booth. The "Down the Drain" game allows us to interact with people and present our message. We want the public to be good stewards of the environment and dispose of items properly (trash, sewer or compost). We will also answer any questions people ask regarding wastewater treatment and food waste.

Magnolia students will inspire visitors to build futuristic cities of their own using recycled materials provided while showcasing our Award Winning Future City. Visitors will also get a chance to build their own mini air cannons and learn the science behind it. Magnolia Science Academy is a free public charter school with an emphasis on STEAM education. Tijuana Estuary Presents - Wonderful Wetlands! Meet live wetland critters, get your hands dirty investigating what lives in a mudflat, be a Tijuana Estuary biologist, and discover why wetlands are important for YOU and for wildlife.

Since 2009 Castle Park High students, with Dr. Pomeroy of UCSD, have learned to produce biodiesel from vegetable oil. Students use a particle counter to determine how “clean” the fuel burns and discuss how particulate impacts our global climate. Students present this field data to support the benefits of biodiesel. Our booth, as in years past, will demonstrate the step-by-step process of biodiesel synthesis, discuss the advantages of biodiesel over petroleum and outline the ease of production.

Booth will consist of one display for community outreach for the San Diego River Park foundation, and one interactive display featuring the San Diego River Park Foundation Cool River Education Program. Live Macroinvertebtates will be on display to highlight stream health assessments.
