Shapes to Forms is a creative education studio located in La Jolla, California, that inspires the next generation of innovators through the art of fashion design. We integrate STEAM concepts into our lessons to teach students how to think critically, problem-solve, and explore their creativity through hands-on projects. Our mission is to empower students, especially girls aged 9-14, to see the connection between design, construction, and real-world applications, fostering a “can-do” attitude in every class.
Interactive Project: Draping Mini Dress Forms/Paper Dolls with Shapes and Fabrics
A current example/demonstration is how Galinda's Gown from WICKED was inspired by the Fibonacci Sequence (The Golden Spiral). We have participants drape pre-cut fabric Golden Spirals onto a dress form. Participants can recreate Galinda's gown.
At this particular event, Shapes to Forms can present a hands-on exploration of draping mini dress forms/paper doll using geometric shapes and various fabrics. This project demonstrates how simple shapes—like triangles, rectangles, and circles—can be transformed into dynamic designs. Participants will learn the basics of draping, and discover how fabric choice, tension, and manipulation influence the final look.
Through this activity, attendees will explore key STEAM concepts such as:
Geometry: Understanding how 2D shapes are transformed into 3D designs.
Engineering: Experimenting with structural stability and tension in fabric.
Art and Creativity: Designing unique looks using different textures, colors, and shapes.
This is suitable for all ages and encourages creativity while introducing participants to the exciting world of fashion design. Stop by and see how fashion design intersects with science and engineering!
