SDAALAS - San Diego branch of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science
We will have origami creatures, quiz questions, spinning wheel for prizes, and possible "match the anatomy" games.

We will be displaying our 2018-19 robot. One of the proudest features we would like to showcase is its arm and intake system. This design allows the robot to pick up different game pieces and flip them to the other side of our robot, preventing the need to turn our robot around when attempting to score. The arm was specifically inspired by "Darth Maul's" double sided light-saber. We will also present how the robot works. Our team will provide any extra information about joining FIRST programs.
Oobleck (Non-Newtonian fluid)- Large aluminum trays filled with Oobleck (cornstarch, water, food coloring), and plastic toy animals next to the trays. Kids can poke the Oobleck with their finger or with a plastic toy. They will not be able to penetrate the Oobleck as it will behave like solid. If they slowly insert their finger or toy into the Oobleck, their finger/toy will go in easily and behave like a liquid. They can make a ball of Oobleck and then let it flow between their fingers.
Engaging, hands-on physics and astronomy demonstrations. Interact with undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs and faculty.
We will be making colorful neurons that kids can take home. We will also test their brains with some fun teaser activities such as the Stroop Task.
Tensegrity-Tension and integrity. 6 popsicle sticks, six rubber bands, six pieces of tape and 6 minutes or so and you have a GTT/MESA Tensegrity model.
Learn about ocean plastic pollution and animal anatomy! Our table will offer examples of ocean plastic pollution and visual materials related to this. Visitors will do a quick experiment to determine the type of plastic in the pollutants. For younger children, NOAA-published age-appropriate materials (coloring sheets, puzzles) will be available. In addition, we will offer human and animal models for examination, with visitors being asked to identify different anatomical regions.
Ever wonder why civil engineers use arches and triangles in the construction of large buildings, including Petco Park? Come and learn the engineering secrets behind the super strength of both arches and triangles. Perform experiments and build a simple structure of your own to take away with you!
Volunteer scientists will lead kids and community members through a hands-on wheat germ DNA extraction. At the end of the activity participants will get to take home the DNA they extracted on a necklace.
Hands on engineering demos that showcase bioengineering and innovations in diagnostics and disease therapeutics
It takes true community spirit and engagement to build a successful Festival and create meaningful year-round STEAM experiences for youth and families throughout San Diego.
