UCSD Bioengineering Graduate Society (BEGS)

Visitors to the booth can participate in a walkthrough illustrating the basics of genetics and how DNA can affect our physical beings. Following the walkthrough, visitors can enjoy three hands on activity stations. The first is a Build your own DNA station, the second is a genetic engineering station, and at the final station, a robot can be build based on the selection of dominate or recessive genes from two parent robots.

UCSD Neuroscience

Neurosciences graduate students founded and organized the Neuroscience Outreach Program to share our knowledge of the brain and neuroscience research with San Diego students and community members. This year at the EXPO our student volunteers present several teaching modules, including sheep brain dissection, comparative neuroanatomy, and demonstrations of electrical signaling in the nervous system, including making a cockroach leg "dance" to music played through an iPhone.

Biodiesel & Algal Studies Group

Since 2009 Castle Park High students, with Dr. Pomeroy of UCSD, have learned to produce biodiesel from vegetable oil. Students use a particle counter to determine how “clean” the fuel burns and discuss how particulate impacts our global climate. Students present this field data to support the benefits of biodiesel. Our booth, as in years past, will demonstrate the step-by-step process of biodiesel synthesis, discuss the advantages of biodiesel over petroleum and outline the ease of production.

Caltech CCI Solar

CCI Solar will present an interactive, hands-on activity where attendees will be able to make their very own solar cell using common household materials. The magic ingredient of blackberry juice is what absorbs the sun's energy and translates sunlight into electricity; therefore we call our activity "Juice from Juice". We also display fuel cells and other recent solar energy technology. We've successfully presented this activity at 2 past Expo Days and look forward to another year!

UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy booth will provide an exposure to the health services that pharmacists provide to our society. Through a series of fun and interactive activities, visitors will learn about different diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and asthma. Furthermore, the booth will provide information about immunization, medication safety and pharmaceutical compounding. Examples of activities include learning how to use inhalers and ingredients necessary for pharmaceutical compounding

San Deigo-Imperial Council Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America's STEM committee would like to have a booth featuring the NOVA Awards program which incorporates learning with cool activities and exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The hope is that these awards stimulate interest in STEM-related fields and shows how science, technology, engineering and mathematics apply to everyday living and the world around them. http://www.sdicbsa.org/Advancement/STEMNovaProgram.php
