Demos planned for this year’s festivities include DNA Extrac, Snap Circuits, Diaper Polymers, Silly Putty and Oobleck. All demos at the booth will be hands-on and are designed to maximize interaction with attendees. Through these activities we hope to engage with the children while introducing key science and engineering fundamentals.
DNA Extrac allows attendees to extract DNA from strawberries. This demo is meant to help participants to visualize DNA and introduces the concept of density separation which is one of the core separation processes employed in chemistry and chemical engineering.
Snap Circuits gives children the opportunity to design their own circuitry while demonstrating key concepts of electrical engineering such as conduction and batteries. The demo is meant to get children thinking of the wide range of possibilities in electronics. Diaper polymers takes a familiar, everyday example of hydrophobicity and hydrophillicity.
Silly putty and Oobleck are fun demonstrations of Non-Newtonian fluids that allows kids to discover new things by applying what they already know. In addition the children can bring home their homemade silly putty/oobleck as a souvenir.
