San Diego State University

San Diego State University representatives from science, health and engineering will provide engaging and interactive activities for students and families of all ages. Touch urchins wearing hats, code your own bracelet, build neurons out of pipe cleaners, explore the solar system in virtual reality and more! Learn directly from the SDSU researchers and innovators leading San Diego to new heights in STEM.

Educreate

We will have a couple of hands-on activities, possibly including making play dough (for kids to begin to think in 3D and mold easy objects); 3D pen creations; fused bead projects, other ideas in the works. Booth visitors will learn about Clicbitz's UCSD Extended Studies college-credit approved courses for middle- and high-school students. Our curriculum: 3d printing, coding, maze game design, fashion design, sewing, sustainability, upcycling, alternative plastics, and more. www.clicbitz.com

Gastec International Corporation

Live demonstration of the Gastec Gas Detector Tube System consisting of a handheld non-electric Gas Sampling Pump and Detector Tubes (for up to 350 different substances) containing non-hazardous reagents in which there will be a chemical reaction resulting in a color change and thereby able to determine what's in the air. There is also a children's version available for educational purposes.

Biodiesel & Algal Studies Group

Since 2009 Castle Park High students, with Dr. Pomeroy of UCSD, have learned to produce biodiesel from vegetable oil. Our booth demonstrates the step-by-step process of biodiesel synthesis, discusses the advantages of biodiesel over petroleum and outlines the ease of production. Our booth includes CAICE researchers who provide demonstrations concerning climate change and atmospheric chemistry. We also partner with Algenesis who demonstrate biodegradable materials that mimic plastics and foams.

Marine Genome Project

The Marine Genome Project focuses on using genetic tools for marine conservation efforts, while increasing diversity, inclusion and accessibility to marine science. Participants can extract DNA from strawberries, assemble the genome of fish, build an underwater kelp forest, go on a virtual scuba dive, and help scientist identify different species living in the ocean

Student clubs and outreach organizations from San Diego State University will provide engaging and interactive demonstrations and activities for students and families of all ages. From rocket launches and racecars to marine animals and sound waves, audiences will learn directly from SDSU students in science and engineering about their favorite subjects.
