Suds & Science—Where Art & Science Intersect, Part 1

Join the Fleet Science Center as they partner with the San Diego Art Institute for a panel discussion about their newest exhibition, Illumination: 21st Century Interactions with Art & Science & Technology. For this exhibition, 26 artists spin research into art to boost public understanding of contemporary issues and explore solutions, both real and imagined. Two artists and scientists will join us to talk about the art and science behind their collaboration.

Speakers:

Sheeana Rae Dowling, Artist

Akiko Surai, Artist

Dr. Olivier George, UCSD

County of San Diego, Department of environmental Health (Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program)

Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program will use a 3-D watershed model to demonstrate how surface water run-of and pollution leads to contamination of our beaches and bays. This impact on our recreational waters can affect our health. Also, we plan on demonstrating the various laboratory processes used for water quality testing in our public health lab, which help identify if the water has microbial pathogens.

Barrio Logan Science & Art Expo

This is NOT your average science event! The Barrio Logan Science & Art Expo is an inclusive annual event that brings together science, art, and culture. Join the Barrio Logan Association, UC San Diego, and various community partners as we highlight science, art and culture in the world around us and celebrate it through a relevant and cultural lens. Some demonstrations include the science behind lowriders, bikes, skateboards, tortillas, brewing, music and more! For questions, volunteer info or to host a booth, please contact us using the RSVP page.

The New Children's Museum's Innovators LAB

The Innovators LAB at The New Children's Museum is a makerspace and laboratory focused on exploring the creative process through the intersection of art, design and STEM. Our LAB provides children and families a safe space to exercise creative confidence, problem solving and collaboration through open-ended design challenges and instructed workshops.

Visit the Innovators LAB for a special pop-up workshop, Amoeba Monsters! Learn how to design and sew a miniature plush organism using re-purposed fabrics, colorful thread, needles and more.

Conservation + Comics - Preserve, Protect, and Make Art with the National Park Service

Art is a powerful tool that can transcend barriers – it can help scientists meet people where they are and tell relatable and impacting stories that move minds. With the Conservation + Comics program, Cabrillo National Monument (National Park Service) provides a distinct experience for youth and families in the greater San Diego area. In our two-part program, participants will be guided by a biologist through a thematic nature exploration of the park, then an art educator will lead the participants in an innovative way to tell scientific stories – through comics!
