Ms. Smarty-Plants Cools the Climate

Ms. Smarty-Plants™ Cools the Climate explores the water cycle, climate change, uncovers the “global weirding” phenomena, and inspires students to conserve San Diego’s most valuable resource: WATER! She takes families on a fun and interactive journey about science using a special mixture of music, magic, and fun. Ms. Smarty-Plants™ ignites the EARTH HERO in each of us! We request you please use the (TM) whenever using the name "Ms. Smarty-Plants™. Thank you.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals

Our booth will consist of a few stations. One station the guests will build replica lungs in a cup using plastic cups and balloons to understand the effects of Cystic Fibrosis in the lungs. To help make this point we will also have a mini lung display hooked up to a computer monitor. At another station guests will make slime.

Brain-themed coloring and mazes, brain trivia games, Stroop effect demonstration (kids say the color of the word, not what the word says), pipe cleaner neuron activity (kids make a neuron out of pipe cleaner and plastic beads to take home)

UCSD Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research

The booth will display our opportunities to participate in classes to learn more about healthy eating and exercise. We will have activities to educate children on healthy eating and encourage exercise. We will also have a "Sugar Display" that demonstrates the dangerous levels of sugar in some of the most common drinks.

Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education

We will have an interactive activity around origami to introduce families to the intersection of STEAM and paper folding, and we will also be bringing our floor loom which anyone can use to learn how to weave! We do what we call 'wabi sabi' weaving which means beauty in imperfection- it is a very fun and engaging activity and we have all of the supplies.

The San Diego River Park Foundation

See what lives under the water and how the food web weaves a story of the San Diego River ecosystem. From dragonfly to bobcat, each animal plays an important role in keeping the river healthy. Make masks and pins of animals that all take part in the creating a river that supports an abundance of life. Create an eco-edible bird feeder that is climate neutral and forest-friendly.

A description of NDIA's participation in STEM activities including robotics and Cybersecurity.

San Diego Public Library

The Library will be promoting our Spring into STEAM free programs for youth ages 9-12. Our interactive activities will be archeology and paleontology themed to go with our Spring into STEAM theme, Dig In! We will also do library card sign ups and hand out STEM themed swag.
