We will have a mechanical lung on display where participants can learn more about Cystic Fibrosis and what it is doing to the human body. Participants will have the chance to build a set of lungs using a plastic cup and balloons. We will also have DNA origami that participants can build. We will also show DNA extraction of a strawberry all while providing instructions for participants to follow at home.

This inclusive, outdoor community event will take place in the heart of Barrio Logan. Combining culture, science and art, the day will include a mix of student competitions, art displays, live exhibits, hands-on STEAM booths, and more! Join us for a family movie night, with a splash of learning! Families will have the chance to gather together and watch the newly released “Sing 2” at San Diego’s iconic Waterfront Park. Before the movie starts, attendees will be able to engage with different booths, each with hands-on STEAM activities. The theme of the night is “building community with STEAM.” The first families in attendance will receive a complimentary picnic blanket and ice cream tickets.

Have you ever wanted to learn more about some cool applications of bioengineering? Come join the Bioengineering Graduate Society at UCSD as we talk about two different bioengineering topics: bacteriophages and chromatography
Bacteria and viruses are known to cause many different diseases, but bioengineers can “reprogram” these microorganisms to get them to help us instead of hurt us. Join us as we explain how a certain type of virus called “bacteriophages” can be engineered to fight bacterial infections and how it saved the life of one of our own faculty members!
In the last year we've talked a lot about lung health, but do you know how your lungs actually work? Join the Bioengineering Graduate Society at UCSD as we explain basic respiratory anatomy and physiology, and guide attendees through a fun and simple lung model activity.
