UCSD Biomedical Engineering Society

UCSD BMES will create a model of the cardiovascular system for SDFSE 2023. We will use a system of clear tubing along with red colored water and clear orbeez to simulate the major arteries of the system and red blood cells. We will connect this system to a manual pump for the user to interact with. With each pump, LED lights connected to an arduino will indicate heart rate, blood oxygenation, and fluid flow.

UCSD Bioengineering Graduate Society

UCSD BEGS will present 2 bioengineering demos at SDFSE 2023. The first demo showcases engineering design principles in the form of brainstorming, designing, and building a bacteriophage that will “attack” a bacteria of their choosing. The second demo will focus on tissue properties and structures as it relates to creating solutions for problems in human health. Students will replicate different tissue layers with common household items for bone, skin, and cardiac tissue.

FTC Team High Voltage #18263

Our goal is to inspire the youth to learn about STEM and robotics. Robotics is a fun way to explore building and programming, leading to solving world problems. Our team is conducting many interactive robot sessions throughout the year at different locations. We want to advertise our robot sessions and invite a lot of kids to our sessions. We also want to encourage kids to participate in FTC (First Tech Challenge) robotics competitions.

The San Diego River Park Foundation

See what lives under the water and how the food web weaves a story of the San Diego River ecosystem. From dragonfly to bobcat, each animal plays an important role in keeping the river healthy. Make masks and pins of animals that all take part in the creating a river that supports an abundance of life. Create an eco-edible bird feeder that is climate neutral and forest-friendly.

Viasat

Curious about artificial intelligence and machine learning? Stop by the Viasat booth to see how your portrait will be drawn using AI and ML and understand how Viasat, Inc. uses AI across the company to create efficiencies and scale our business.

La Jolla Institute for Immunology

We will review how your body develops immunity with antibodies. Visitors will cut out paper antibodies to discuss how they relate to COVID-19 and vaccines. Visitors will construct a replica of a virus to explain the structure of viruses like COVID-19. Separately, we will bring a prepared petri dish sealed with bacteria expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) contained in a dark box. Visitors will shine a UV flashlight on the dish to see the bacteria glow. We will discuss GFP and immunology.

National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) San Diego Chapter

A description of NDIA's participation in STEM activities including robotics and Cybersecurity.
A computer slide show of NDIA STEM events with pictures of robotic/cybersecurity team and student involvement
A display of a robotic vehicle programmed with neopixel light sequences and one with a 6 DOF manipulator mounted on top.
Two vehicles programmed with joystick control for limited student participation.
A bench top display of an undersea Remotely Operated Vehicle.

San Diego Public Library

The Library will be promoting our Spring into STEAM free programs for youth ages 9-12. Our interactive activities will be archeology and paleontology themed to go with our Spring into STEAM theme, Dig In! We will also do library card sign ups and hand out STEM themed swag.
