Makers and Mimosas

Sun, Mar 11 - 10:30am to 1:30pm

The Fleet Science Center, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering are so excited to co-produce the 21+ finale event for Festival Week called: Makers and Mimosas. Grab a glass of bubbles, bring out your inner artist, and mix in a little science. It’s all here for you! Engage with local Makers as you interact and view their beautiful installations and displays. Then take a break to have some breakfast bites and engage in one of our DIY maker-stations which will include take-home items and creations. Be sure not to miss the on-site creation of a next generation spacecraft structure built out of origami in a life-size form. Manan Arya, a technologist and space origami engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory brings his passion and work to life throughout the event. Tickets will include two drink tickets and breakfast.

There will be two interactive maker installations on sound:
1) Melodic Distortion Field: an interactive sonic installation which pentatonically reharmonizes the sounds around us to create a strange new harmonic language. It creates a sound world focused intensely on a single viewer/listener which is barely audible at any greater distance
2) Relay Rythms: an interactive sound sculpture that uses salvaged industrial relays and custom circuitry to create polyrhythmic clicks. Clicking is controlled by the black knobs, and corresponding lights illuminate when each click occurs. The device subdivides a master tempo into integer divisions between a whole note and sixteenth note (i.e. 1:1 through 1:16) and consequently maintains locked rhythmic relationships between the clicks. Since there are three relays, polyrhythms like 1:2:3 or 13:14:15 are available, and master tempo is controlled by the black knob on the front of the box. The circuitry also has three audio jacks which output signals that toggle between zero and five volts in synchronization with corresponding relays. Relay timing and control is managed by an arduino which sends signals to transistors that energize the relays.

There will be a make & take activity on hydroponics by Urban Growth Farms. And there will be 2 more interactive stations by the Fleet Science Center (Make your own coasters and wine charms)
