Design & Build a Physical Architectural Model

Monday through Thursday

San Diego Central Library, IDEA Lab, 8th floor

Design and build like an architect in celebration of Teen Tech Week, in March. During this 4-day workshop, you will have an opportunity to design a 2D floor plan and then use foam core to build a mini 3D architectural model to scale. Showcase of your models, will take place on Thursday, March 9th in the library.

Open to ages 12 and up.

SDSU Science & Engineering Sampler

The College of Sciences and College of Engineering at San Diego State University open their doors to K-12 students and families to showcase 22 interactive exhibits such as: CSI Meets CSU, Show-Me Geology, telescopes, planetarium showings, laser demonstrations, SuperSonic Ping-Pong Balls, Electron Microscope Facility, aerospace, robotics, making ice cream using liquid nitrogen, X-ray Crystallography, and much more.

Maker Technology Course

Limit 25 people (18+ only). Are you an educator, tinkerer or craftsman looking to expand your repertoire? Have you been thinking about purchasing the latest Maker tools for you your next project? 3D Printing, CNC, Laser Cutters and more. Examine the options of buying your own equipment or investing in a local maker space membership. This course provides an overview of various Maker tools and technologies, as well as the state of the industry. This course can save you thousands of dollars and hundreds of wasted hours of trying to find the best solution yourself.

STEAM Maker Open House

Come visit the workshop that your inner 12 year old would love to have attended and see how the STEAM sausage is made! Get ideas on how to implement Laser cutting, 3D printing, Robotics, Virtual Reality and more in the classroom or youth group environment. All ages welcome. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Fleet Night of Science—Detectives vs. Engineers

Investigate the Fleet Science Center after hours at our next Fleet Night of Science event: Detectives vs. Engineers! This 21+ event celebrates the newest offerings at the Fleet: our brand-new giant screen film Dream Big, which is about engineering our world, and our newest exhibition, Sherlock Holmes and the Clocktower Mystery. First, catch the premiere of Dream Big, then put on your hard hat and construct a derby car, create a Rube Goldberg contraption and design a structure that will survive our earthquake simulator.

Spring Public Girl Scout Sleepover

Have you ever wanted to spend an adventurous night in a museum?
On Saturday, March 11th, your Girl Scout is invited to the Fleet Science Center’s Girl Scout Sleepover. She will have the opportunity to explore mind-boggling Illusions, the science behind how human cells are formed, the importance of water conservation and more in our eight interactive exhibit galleries. She will also get to attend two fun, educational workshops, participate in a scavenger hunt, and view an IMAX movie in the Heikoff Dome Theater.

Dream Big: Engineering Our World.

Dream Big: Engineering Our World is the first film of its kind for IMAX® theaters and will transform how we think about engineering. From the world’s tallest buildings to underwater robots and a solar car race across Australia, Dream Big celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small. The film shows how engineers push the limits of innovation in unexpected and amazing ways.

Archaeology and Mapping with Drones

In this second part of a three part series on archaeology and drones, participants will work in teams with Cara Ratner, owner of Archaeology For Kids, to create their own archaeology plan map. Also, Jeff Riolo and his crew from Empower UAV will give a demonstration on aerial drone technology as a tool for science. Empower UAV is a San Diego based company of professionals, educators, and aviators providing a wide variety of aerial photography services with drones.

Expanding Your Horizons Conference for Girls

The Expanding Your Horizons Conference is a unique opportunity for girls in grades 6 through 10 to engage in hands-on workshops in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) led by San Diego’s top scientists, engineers, and specialists. This unique event is designed to foster young girls’ enthusiasm for STEM careers, inform them of professions and opportunities, and encourage them to continue their studies in science and math to reach their goals and objectives.

Bee Builders

Local Beekeeper, Hilary Kearney, will provide an interactive presentation teaching children what a beekeeper does and explores the concepts of pollination, beehives and bees’ lifecycles.
